Save Money, Save The World - Mow Less



I wrote this for the Treenex site a few weeks ago.

Mowing season has been longer in the North East US because of a cool, wet month of June. Mowing is at least a twice weekly chore – still! Who has that kind of time? Well, there are many ways you can reduce the amount and the frequency you mow.

Why is this important? There are at least 2 reasons and they both revolve around the air we breathe.

Emissions

If you use a gas powered mower of any kind, you’re emissions for the time you mow equal those of at least 4 cars idling in your driveway. Riding mowers emit more than push mowers, by volume mowed. This means even if you finish sooner, you’ve still emitted more COx’s, NOx’s, and SOx’s. Ew! And since the small engines are just starting to be regulated for emission control, it will be more than a decade until reduced emission models are common place.

Carbon Sequestration and Air Filtration

Because mowing grass less often means fewer emissions, it means the grass is allowed to do more to filter and use carbon that is already in the air. I’ll cover more on this very soon.

How To Mow Less (Before)

Set your mower up higher
By setting your mower to 3″ (7.5 cm) or more, you more rapidly achieve the above mentioned goals.

Healthier grass is longer grass.
Longer grass is able to retain moisture better by shading its roots and having a more complex root system. Generally speaking, the longer the grass blade, the longer the root. So not only is there less evaporation (not what the blades give off, but what is directly evaporated by the sun and breeze), the grass has a chance to reach for more water that is deeper in the soil. You’ll have less irrigating to do and your grass will still be green during periods of drought. Longer grass also hinders weeds from getting a foot hold since the shade is so dense. This doesn’t allow for adequate sunlight to reach seeds or seedlings. All of these things make it so fewer chemicals are necessary for a green thick carpet of grass.

Less Frequent Mowings
Grasses that are typically chosen for lawns have a short mature length. This means they won’t grow to be a 3 foot tall stem of grass if left to its own devices. As they approach their mature length, they naturally slow their growth rate. By allowing the grass to stay longer like this, the more slowly it will strive to achieve its mature length/height. This results in needing to mow less frequently.

Longer grass also means an increase in photosynthesis and air filtration. The more green volume you have, the more filtration of dust and small particles occurs and the more photosynthesis occurs. Carbon dioxide is converted to plant nutrients with oxygen released as a by-product. Having an increase in green volume means you have an increase in carbon utilization and oxygen production.

Say your grass length is generally 2 1/2″ inches (6 1/4 cm) and your lawn is 25′x30′ (7.6 m x 9.1m). Changing from that 2 1/2″ to 3″ doesn’t seem like a huge change, does it? Well, when you calculate the green volume (length x width x height), you’ll find that you’re adding a huge sum! It would be as if you’re adding another 250 square feet of 2 1/2″ grass to your lawn! All for free and no added effort!

Increase Your Speed
By increasing the speed with which you mow, you decrease the amount of time the engine is running, reducing emissions. Most mowers have various speeds to move, so find one that is just slightly uncomfortably fast.

Change Your Pattern
By changing how you mow, you will spend less time mowing as well. If you have large areas to mow, mow in a spiral. This virtually eliminates the need to stop and turn, which makes mowing more efficient and faster for you! If you have smaller areas, choose the angle that allows you the longest distance between turns. It isn’t quite as efficient as spiral mowing, but it works very well.

Reduce engine speed.
Most engines also have a variable speed factor to them. Play with this a bit, but mow at the lowest possible engine speed. This will also reduce emissions (in theory – older engines often run cleanest at their highest setting).

Reduce The Amount Of Space Mowed (after)
By creating unmown spaces – not decks or walks or impervious ground covers – you decrease the need to mow, decreasing emissions. By making areas into garden spaces, you are also significantly increasing filtration rates. Microbes in the soil do massive amounts of filtration on air born chemicals. They also do quite a bit for carbon sequestration. So, between the open soil space and the perennial plants you place in there, you are increasing photosynthesis and air filtration.
And as I alway say, the less I mow, the less I mow! LOL I’d far rather spend time looking at my flower beds than sweating behind a mower.

Results
In the last 5 years, I have focused on reducing the amount of mowing our property requires. I have reduced it by at least 1/3, and more likely 1/2 by increasing the number and space of flower beds, raising the height on the mower and reducing the number of times I mow different areas. Drought prone areas are mown 1/2 as often as the more rapidly growing areas. Rather than mow for an hour each time, I’m mowing for 20-30 minutes. People rave about the flower beds and I get to sit on my deck and watch the bees and hummingbirds do their job!

As you can see, it takes time and a small amount of effort, but doing so actually reduces your efforts substantially AND helps the environment. How much better can it get?

EarthDay Eco FootPrint

Wow. All of my answers were in the minimal or little range and it would still take 3.5 earths to support my lifestyle, if everyone chose to adopt it.
That's scary!
We're in a little bitty house that uses not a lot of electricity or natural gas (compared to national standards), don't drive around much, recycle everything possible, grow our own food and buy what we can't from within a 200 mile radius (their definition of local).
And it's STILL 3.5 earths!
So much for being low key. And we'd need 15.6 global acres to support little old me.
I make most of my clothes, rarely buy new stuff yearly, much less monthly, and reuse what I can in other forms around the house.
This is just nasty! Insulting! Humbling! Humiliating even. LOL
I guess I'll be trying harder.

Carbon Diet Calculator

WOW! This thing is GREAT!
Yes, it could have more menu options. Yes, it could have drinks. But it doesn't. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But it gives a very clear indication of how much carbon and climate changing gases your eating emits. And not just from your body. From the production, preparation, shipping, packaging, heating, freezing, and whatever else is done to it for you to have some 'convenience' in your day.

On average - you save a whole 12 minutes using highly processed foods, rather than cooking from 'scratch'. I'll use those 12 minutes to make a meal that is far more enjoyable, less toxic to my body and half as toxic to the earth.

Eat Low Carbon

It has 2 different categories - make your own meals - which you choose the items you would typically cook for a meal for you, or ready made meals - which you normally reheat. Use both and see what happens. Each 4500 points (I guess similar to Weight Watcher's method for losing weight) is equal to 3 tons of carbon emissions.

I calculated for us both ways. Each would be around 2300 points with all ready made, or around 1100 the way we cook now.

Utility Bill Savings

Since I moved back to my parents' house in 2001, I've been doing what I can to make the house more energy efficient. All 3 of us are on very limited incomes now and so must conserve the collective monies in any way possible.

One problem being, they are elderly and are getting cold at warmer temperatures. This means each year, the average indoor temperature goes up about a degree. And with Mom's heart/lung issues, she needs AC in the summer for air quality as much as temperature. So AC is turned on at cooler outdoor temps.

Conserving with parameters like these is a challenge! However, with a 140 y.o. house, it's not as bad as it could be. I'm getting close to maxing out on improvements, but I have about another year of major work before I'm struggling to find ways to bring the numbers down.

My natural gas (NG) and electric (E) numbers go back to 2004. Unfortunately, I've not found the bills for prior to 2004, although I'm certain my mom has kept them somewhere. It's just a matter of finding them.

Late in 2005, so the numbers are reflected more in 2006, we insulated an unheated space of the house, the cellarway. It went from hideous to fab (by comparison) in a month. Life can be that good sometimes!
We weren't able to add a lot of insulation, but a new window was put in, a new door, a new storm door, drywall and caulking continues as I find new cracks to fill.

This, along with the addition of CFLs to most of our lighting, was all we could do for the house. I turned my attention to landscaping for 2006.
Some of the improvements helped with the heating and cooling of the house, but mostly beautification and reducing the amount of lawn to be mowed.

2007 turned into the year life was put on hold. Mom had her heart attack April 1, and is still undergoing stent placement 18 months later. I did little more than trying to keep the house running since she was fully unable, I'm barely able and Dad is oblivious/unable. LOL I did get some more of the attic insulated with radiant barrier, but that was it.

And finally 2008 rolled around. It's been the year of weather extremes. Hot, dry, cold, snow. And that was just April. But truly, we had many more days to AC and to heat than the previous 2 years, so I was certain we'd be headed for trouble.
However, we were able to remodel Dad's bedroom, which meant ripping out the lath and plaster, insulating fully and making it look like something other than a 140 y.o. attic space.



Yes, those are plank walls.
With the added insulation all the way around, his room accounts for almost 25% of the roofline. A mighty big chunk to be insulating. And WOW did it help during the summer! The upstairs stayed cooler when I added the reflective barrier stuff to crawl spaces - by almost 10 degrees. This decreased it another 15. So rather than being 100 on an 80 degree day, it was 80 at 4 in the afternoon on an 85 degree day.
The house needed to stay as cool as before, but the AC didn't run half as much because of the house staying cooler all by itself.
This winter, I have better wood to use in the woodstove, which is poorly placed to be heating the entire house (and so doesn't). The pieces are smaller, which makes it far easier for me to control the heat output. And, I've finally installed those programmable thermostats I bought a year ago. Both factors keep Dad from playing with the heat as much - at all really.
I also purchased a spin dryer. I know solar dryers are the best, but with all of the disabilities in the house, the electric dryer is really necessary. So, by spin drying, I can remove up to 2 quarts of water from the clothes before they hit the dryer. All for 300 watts. Drying time is halved, saving us a ton in electricity.

The amount of money saved for this year alone, from 2004's numbers to 2008's numbers is nearly 1G. Amazingly, electric is within 1 penny of the 2004 cost. So, even though that's seen such a dramatic decrease in use, it's not as dramatic for cost savings as the NG. But, any savings is more than worth it to me!
I also know they were paying more per month for their utilities in 2001 than I am paying now, so there has been at least a halving of the amount used over the last 7 years.
The savings are being put back into the house - we'll be redoing my room next. It's on the NW side of the house, no insulation, storm windows that don't really work, and receives the full brunt of winter wind - even with the landscaping I've done.
It should be interesting to see what savings we accrue this coming year. It makes me very excited!

Plan a Green Wedding

First, my thoughts.
What used to be a "simple" wedding is now being called a "green" wedding. It makes me laugh. I was married a long time ago, in a galaxy far away about 5 lives ago. But, I remember it well and still look upon it fondly.

We were young and needed to set up a full house, so our registery was useful to us. Not so much anymore. So - don't register if you don't need. If you feel the need to register, seriously consider registering at a store for a local charity. An example would be our local childrens home. They always have a list of needs, and you can register on their behalf.

We didn't have a lot of money, so couldn't invite the world. And didn't. We had an absolute maximum limit of 100 people. It ended up being around 70. How many "closest" friends and family do you really have? And don't invite someone just because they invited you to their child's wedding. If you never see them, WHY invite them?

We chose to have our reception on a dinner train. That eliminated many aspects of planning, cost, and waste.

We chose a chicken entree because it was inexpensive and everyone can eat chicken, whereas many people don't do well with whatever particular cut of beef you get. Looking at it from an environmental perspective - chicken is the least intrustive of the meats for the environment. Beef is next, and surprisingly - because of the mass production - pork is the worst.

Had we been able to afford it, we would have gone with local wines, for we live near the NYS wine country. Using local foods is always the best, for it highlights local flavors for out of town guests, supports your local economy and is best for the environment. It's called being a "locavore".

Since it was a dinner train, we were using their china, flatware, cloth napkins, glass (not crystal, which I'm fine with). No waste there.

While I didn't want to do the traditional invitation, I was young and not nearly as self-confident in taking a stand. I am all for the saying "less is more". I'm also huge for using email. Send a simple 1-page invitation and do as much of the follow-up via internet as you can. If this doesn't appeal to you, use as little as possible. Post card RSVPs, phone instructions, etc.

My soon to be Sister In Law hosted my shower at her home. It was all home-made food, no favors, no alcohol. Just sitting around enjoying everyone's company. Imagine that!

My gown and the brides maids gowns were handmade - to keep cost down. SILK - because it was silk or linen and since it was after Labor Day, linen was just not allowed! The boys rented their tuxedos, so no needless purchasing to sit in the closet until the hereafter.

The parents were urged to wear dressy outfits they already owned, but I couldn't force that issue.

The cake was home made. Poor Mom! Nervous break-down was about to occur.

Flowers were minimal since space was a premium on the train. They were taken to local nursing homes. No favors were given because I didn't see the need - no one keeps them anyway!

No rice or seeds or whatnot were thrown, but I did get to throw my flowers from the train engine! Very cool!

It was beautiful. It was simple. Very little stress. Very little waste.

Our photos were done by my brother and my uncle - both of whom are great photographers and had done many weddings previously. This cut down on cost. But more importantly, it cut down on the new tradition of using disposable cameras. I think they are a great idea, but wow, the amount of film used and processed for the number of decent pictures isn't worth it. Ew.

We had no real intention of being a "green" wedding. We just wanted simple. It's funny how simple often results in being "grean".

Live Earth Carbon Foot Print

Last week, we released the Carbon Assessment and Footprint report documenting our environmental performance on 07-07-07. This is the first time that an event of this magnitude has measured and presented its impact in such a detailed report. In an effort to offer another means of viewing this data, we partnered with Visible Strategies of Vancouver, Canada to graphically display the data of our Carbon Footprint in their interactive "see-it" reporting tool. With this tool, you can easily interact with the data, compare each city's results and read interesting stories about how each venue managed in the areas of energy, transportation and waste by venue. Pre-Event Estimates
The media cited a variety of estimates before the concerts. On concert day, the Daily Mail quoted an estimate of 31,500 tons of carbon emissions for the global event footprint (including attendee transport), and a waste estimate of 1,025 tons. Internal estimates were generated as well to assess the success of reduction strategies and act as a safeguard to large number variances.
In June, Live Earth produced a final pre-event internal estimate of 18,526 tons, after most reduction strategies were planned and long-term changes were in place, but before the results of concert-day reductions could be known.

Post-Event Calculations
After the Live Earth concerts, we calculated our estimated gross carbon emissions, throughout
our ten-month planning and execution process (and including the concert day itself) at 19,708 tons.

Live Earth’s post-event calculations of our estimated emissions were significantly below all pre-event external estimates in every category except for audience travel. Our actual carbon footprint was roughly 40% below the estimate quoted in the Daily Mail.

Additionally, we generated only about one-tenth the amount of waste that was expected, and of the waste we did generate, 81% was diverted from landfills to be composted or recycled.

As is typical for live events, a great majority (86%) of the estimated emissions were generated
by the nearly 1 million people attending the concerts. Energy use and air travel by Live Earth staff and artists combine to make up the next three largest categories: electricity and fuel use

Achievements by Others

The NFL Super Bowl has been phasing in “green” practices for several years. The carbon accounting for the 2006 Super Bowl measured the impact of selected emissions-generating activities.

The carbon equivalent measured for those activities was roughly 500 tons, with about 70% attributed to the NFL transportation fleet used to shuttle NFL guests around the host city, and 30% attributed to electricity use at the venue.

Likewise, the producers of the 79th Academy Awards took impressive steps to “green” the telecast and related events. Carbon accounting was only one of the environmental issues addressed in the course of producing the Oscars, which also part of the Oscars’ focus, which also included species extinction, deforestation, toxic waste, and environmental pollution. The carbon accounting focused primarily on energy use.

Because they were multi-venue events like Live Earth, the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2006 Olympics are worth reviewing. The 2006 World Cup games in Germany saw 3.4 million attendees at 64 games in 12 cities. The World Cup greenhouse gas accounting captured approximately 92,000 tons of carbon equivalents and the World Cup generated approximately 1,494 tons of waste.

The 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy provide another basis for comparison. The Games consisted of 16 days of competition with 342 Olympic Medal events in 3 Olympic Villages. The carbon accounting considered transportation by teams, officials, sponsors, volunteers and media to and within the Olympic Villages (but not travel by spectators), preparation, operation and dismantling of accommodations and venues, and transportation for waste management. Total carbon emissions measured 106,000 tons, and the Games generated 1,212 tons of waste.

Associated Organizations

Alliance for Climate Protection
The Alliance is a new organization engaged in an unprecedented public education campaign on both the urgency and the solvability of the climate crisis.

Building on the momentum of “An Inconvenient Truth,” our objective is to persuade individuals, communities, states, and corporations across the world to begin to quickly reduce their own greenhouse pollution in order to become “carbon neutral.” Furthermore, The Alliance is working to move the US past a tipping point, beyond which political and business leaders and all sectors of civil society compete to offer policies and programs that will sharply reduce emissions.

Through an innovative combination of communication platforms—like Live Earth—and an influential collection of supporters that includes the environmental community, key leaders in business, the entertainment industry, hunters, labor and many others, the Alliance will reach new audiences that until now have not engaged in solving the climate crisis.

The Climate Group
The Climate Group is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing business
and government leadership on climate change, based in the US, UK and Australia and operating internationally.

The Climate Group convened last summer’s roundtable discussion with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Prime Minister Tony Blair and a select group of prominent CEOs and business leaders from leading California and international companies to share ideas on how business and government can work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The roundtable resulted in a historic cooperation agreement between the UK and California to advance the deployment of clean energy and clean technologies and a Leadership Statement on Climate Change signed by twelve of the participating CEOs.

I Count
I Count is the campaign of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, which brings together over 50 of the UK’s most respected organisations passionate about climate change. With a combined experience of over 700 years and a supporter base of over 4 million, the campaign is showing the public and politicians that climate change is not too big a problem to fix.

The campaign has created a range of compelling ways to inspire individuals to reduce their carbon footprint in work, rest and play and a public platform to demand that the UK government keep within the widely accepted global warming danger threshold of 2 degrees C.
As the NGO partner for LIVE EARTH UK, I Count will transform all the awareness and excitement generated by the concert, into individual action and positive pressure on politicians.

Avaaz.org
Avaaz.org is a new multi-issue online network that provides opportunities for citizens of every country to take concerted action on urgent global problems like climate change, poverty, and human rights. Its mission is to ensure that the views and values of the world’s people shape global decisions.

It operates in 12 languages. Launched in January 2007, Avaaz.org has grown to more than 1 million members hailing from every nation in the world. Avaaz means “voice” in several European, Middle Eastern, and Asian languages.

Climate Action Partnership
CAP is an alliance between major conservation
organizations in South Africa who have a common vision of reducing the impact of climate change on South Africa’s unique natural diversity. CAP aims to reduce species extinctions by planning for climate change, for example by incorporating conservation corridors into South African landscapes, allowing species to shift their ranges in response to changes in climatic conditions.
CAP also works to reduce South Africans’ carbon footprints and in addition offers carbon footprint offset opportunities through forest rehabilitation projects in South Africa, benefiting the climate while at the same time increasing habitat for forest species and creating jobs for rural communities.

The Brazilian Forum of NGOs and Social Movements
for the Environment and the Development (FBOMS) was created in 1990 in order to facilitate the participation of civil society in the process of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Rio-92). FBOMS mission is the harmonization between social, economic and environmental questions aiming at sustainable development, seeking to achieve a fair, equal and environmentally sound society.

ICLEI–Local Governments for Sustainability is an international association of 1,000 local governments,
including more than 250 in the United States, working to advance sustainable development

When it comes to global warming, ICLEI’s members provide leadership at the local, national and global scale and are proving that local action can indeed move the world.

United Nations Environment Programme
UNEP’s China office in Beijing works closely with the State Environmental Protection Administration
of China (SEPA) and other ministries, international agencies and nongovernmental organizations in implementing programmes in environmental assessment, law, education and training, management, technology transfer and innovation, and natural disaster prevention. It also helps to develop and support projects under the Global Environment Facility, an international fund to address climate change, biodiversity, land degradation, transboundary water and chemical management issues.

World Future Council
